OZ to ML

Oz to Ml conversion. Many liquid items are sold in ounce containers. Milk, for example, can be sold in 16-ounce cartons. That amount of milk gives you 298 calories, 25 grams of carbs, and 15 grams of protein. Did you notice that we also used grams as the unit of measure for the carbs and protein? That’s because most people in the world understand the concept of a gram. It’s part of the more systematic metric system.

The use of ounce, on the other hand, is part of the more problematic English system of measurement. To add to the confusion, the ounce measurement is used for precious metals and bullion coins. It’s called troy ounce. But this time, there are 480 grains to 1 troy ounce! Are you confused yet? Don’t worry, most people have found this too complicated. It’s why they now use the more sensible metric system of milliliters and liters instead.

OZ to ML – Unit Definition

Even though the fluid ounce is used for liquids, you still need to differentiate between the various versions and definitions.

  • One definition is the United States customary fluid ounce.
    • An ounce here is the equivalent of 29.5735295625 ml.
    • It’s also 6 teaspoons.
    • An ounce is the same as 2 tablespoons.
    • It’s equal to 1/8 of a US cup.
    • It is 1/16 of a US pint.
    • It’s equal to 1/32 of a US quart.
    • It’s 1/128 of a US gallon.
  • Since the customary fluid ounce converts to an unwieldy metric measurement, this has been changed to just 30 ml instead.
  • Then there is the United States food labeling fluid ounce.
  • However, in the UK they use the Imperial fluid ounce.
  • This is also known as the UK fluid ounce. You have to use this definition if the text is of UK origin. It may be written by a UK writer or it may be featured in a UK website or publication.
  • • It is equal to 28.4130625 milliliters.
    • It’s the equivalent of 0.96 US customary fl oz.
    • It is 1/20 of an imperial pint, or 0.05 imperial pints.
    • It is 1/40 of an imperial quart, or 0.25 imperial quarts.
    • It is 1/160 of an imperial gallon.
  • A milliliter, however, is easier to understand. It uses the decimal system of tens.
    • It’s 1/1000 of a liter.
    • 10 ml is 1 centiliter.
    • 100 ml is 1 deciliter.
    • 1000 ml is 1 liter.

So how do you know if the fluid ounce measurement you have is US customary, US food labeling, or UK/Imperial?

  • If it’s an American text or in an American publication, then it’s US customary fluid ounce (US fl oz). So for recipes, the fluid ounce is in US customary.
  • If you’re putting it on a food label, then you use the US food labeling ounce. That’s because putting in 30 ml doesn’t take up as much space in the label as 28.4130625 milliliters.
  • If the text is from the UK or from a Commonwealth nation (Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc.) then it’s likely that the unit is a UK/Imperial version of the fluid ounce (UK/Imperial fl oz).

If you’re using a calculator, multiply your measurement by 29.5735295625. So if you have 5 ounces of water, that’s 5 x 29.5735295625 on you calculator. This equals 147.8676478125 ml. You can also keep it simpler by multiplying by 29.57 instead.

What if you’re in the UK or your text is from a UK publication? Then you multiply your multiply your measurement by 28.4130625. So let’s say your text refers to 5 ounces of water. That’s 5 x 28.4130625, which equals 142.0653125 ml. If you want to keep things simple, you can just multiply by 28.41 instead.
